                                            English Learner (EL) Teacher (Kindergarten – Grade 12)

 

 

Reports to: Coordinator of EL, Immigrant and Migrant Education

 

 

JOB SUMMARY:  The teacher for English learners (EL) provides leadership in Hazelwood schools by advocating for multilingual students and their families, and by working flexibly and collaboratively with the EL coordinator, EL team, classroom teachers and building administrators to facilitate English learners’ acquisition of academic and social language and academic learning targets.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:  Education – Bachelor’s degree and a Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Teaching Certification.  Missouri English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) K-12 Certification or ability to obtain temporary or provisional certification according to the state of Missouri rules.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE:  Knowledge of the Missouri (WIDA) English Language Development (ELD) standards, current ELD teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based on academic English proficiency levels.  Ability to communicate effectively with multi-lingual, multi-cultural students and their parents/guardians. Proficiency in various EL program delivery models including pull-out ESOL, push-in, co-teaching, etc.

 

EXPERIENCE PREFERRED (NOT REQUIRED): Classroom teaching experience at the level assigned; Evidence of improving student acquisition of academic language and academic achievement; Training and practical experience in instructional management, content and language integrated curriculum development, implementation and evaluation.  Knowledge of or willingness to get training in the ELD coaching service delivery model. Fluency in an additional language other than English is a plus.

 

SKILLS/ABILITIES:

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:   While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, talk and hear.  The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, and to lift up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, the ability to adjust and focus, and depth perception. Specific hearing abilities required include normal conversation, phone conversation, and isolating voices in multiple conversations.   

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT / CONDITIONS:  Works in a classroom environment a majority of the time.

 

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:  Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

 

EQUIPMENT / TOOLS/ MATERIALS USED:   Computer, copier, scanner, projector, telephone, calculator.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Assigned to 190 day work calendar; 36 hours and 40 minutes per week minimum; compensation and benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision, Life) as provided by the Board of Education
