POSITION TITLE: McKinney Vento Support Specialist

 

REPORTS TO: Director of Enrollment

 

POSITION SUMMARY: Performs various duties associated with supporting the needs of the displaced student population and ensuring the delivery of mandated services to facilitate the student’s attendance and access to appropriate education.

 

POSITION START DATE:  July 1, 2024

FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

Essential Functions

  • Demonstrate strong organization skills in case management.
  • Work closely with the Homeless Liaison to ensure a seamless, time-sensitive enrollment process for McKinney-Vento Eligible students.
  • Collaborate with school personnel to disseminate appropriate information relevant to student/family needs
  • Serve as a resource to parents/guardians by providing family support activities and communicating available services.
  • Spearhead wraparound meetings with school personnel, and homeless liaison to report out on status updates relating to student academic progress, removal of barriers, graduation checklist, etc.
  • Monitor student/family progress and status to ensure that academic success is achieved, and wraparound services are being provided
  • Collaborate with school-based organizations, associations, and community interagency teams that provide services to families and children (e.g. Bright Futures, Parent Involvement Programs, St. Louis County Continuum of Care, and Keeping Kids in Designated Schools)
  • Conduct residential visits and outreach to motels, shelters and community agencies
  • Provide well-organized materials for homeless to site-based personnel (motels, shelters, etc.) working with youth and families
  • Establish community contacts that would assist in helping parents as they seek employment opportunities in the community
  • Attend and participate in conferences and workshops related to homelessness
  • Serves as back up to the Dispatcher Router in coordinating transportation with private vendors to ensure that students are transported to and from school.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor

 

        

POSITION QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

 

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Education, Social work, Counseling, Psychology, or related experience providing services for school aged children.

 

Experience: On the job experience in providing social services or counseling assistance to children and their families.

 

Skills and Abilities which may be representative but not all inclusive of those commonly associated with this position 

 

  • Possess positive and effective communication skills, written and verbal. Deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations. Apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
  • Perform the basic functions of arithmetic; add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure. Compute ratio, rate and percent. Draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Perform reading, writing and speaking at an intermediate level. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents in the facilitation of their well-being.

Personal computer and related software, typewriter, calculator, fax machine, photocopier.

 

 

License(s)/Certification(s) required: Bachelor’s degree in Education, Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or related field

  • Sitting, walking, standing, talking, hearing, stooping or crouching to access file drawers.
  • Normal mental attention with clarity of vision at 20 inches or less as well as 20 feet or more required.
  • Nominal physical effort required ranging from moving very light (1 to 5 lbs.) items by hand to rarely moving light to average (5 to 60 lbs.) boxes of paper and other supplies with assistance.

 

Environmental/Atmospheric Conditions: Environmental and atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job.
